Variegated yarn afghan pattern

dedekorz

Question

I am looking for an afghan pattern for blue variegated yarn. Skill level is no problem. I keep drawing blanks as to what pattern would do this yarn justice. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!:hook

And I just thought of this one on ravelry.com:

JulieAnny's Stained Glass Afghan Square

by Julie Yeager

I haveI love this pattern and have made one square with it for a sampler afghan, and I think it could be pretty with blue variegated peeking through the "panes."

I do a mile a minute type afghan using variegated in the center. The center strip stitch I like best is over 13 stitches: a dc for the end, a shell (2dc, ch 1, 2 dc - over 5 stiches), a dc, shell, dc on the end. It has looked really good with most of the variegated I have tried it with.

I also second the corner to corner throw someone linked to. The yarn used in the one on the pattern is Monet Print, with very short color runs, but it seems to work well with regular ombres too. The only one I have not liked it with is RHSS Peruvian that has quite long runs of some colors and it make it look too stripey for my taste. The alternating directions of these stitches make more distinct blocks of color than some other patterns.

I also agree with the round ripple suggestion.

I agree with how gorgeous these yarns look in the skein. I''m a real sucker for them in the stores, but it has taken me a long time to find patterns for them.

Excellent suggestion for using the variegated yarn in conjunction with solids for the Mile-a-Minute afghan patterns. I didn't even think of that.

I'm a newbie crocheter myself (just started in December 2011). On yarn shopping trips those variegated yarns always look so beautiful, like candy. But when you try out any sophisticated pattern, the intricate stitches get lost. E.g., I tried making a Catherine's Wheel Throw (http://www.redheart.com/free-patterns/catherine%E2%80%99s-wheel-throw) in a Loops & Threads Impeccable medium weight yarn in neopolitan (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Loops-Threads-Impeccable-yarn-Neapolitan-Ombre-lot-3-/370622104859, so pretty, looks like neopolitan ice cream!) and it came out scary looking! :eek

I agree with nowaybud. Mile A Minute's are lovely with varigated and solids mixed. Also, when you work with some varigated you can get "pooling"if you are doing large areas of that color. That's where the colors clump up and make ugly puddles. You can fix that by working with different skeins and every couple of rows end off and start again from a different skein in a different place on the yarn.

As a very quick baby blanket was needed I pulled out the varigated yarn and did a row of double crochet one way and a row of single crochet going back. This pattern went fast and looked so good in varigated.

I find fancy stitches get "lost" with varigated yarns, so the simpler the better.

I find a good stitch to use for variegated yarn is the seed stitch. The little "squares" come out in different colors!

In my baby blankets I used varigated yarn, and each of them were a bit different. It was fun!

I know you are looking for free patterns but you might look for this in a library or put it on your wish list (only $4.21 on Amazon) as I believe it has the prettiest variegated afghan on the cover (the blue & purple one). http://www.amazon.com/DRG-Publishing-Annies-Attic-Variegations/dp/tech-data/B002Q0O3SM I bought the book just for this pattern and was pleased to find it has several good ones.

Here is a free one:

I used this Basketweave pattern with camo variegated for my son: http://www.crochetkim.com/patterns/basketweave.html Thanks to Kim Guzman!

I like doing Mile-A-Minute afghans in varigated and using solids on the outside rows. Have made several and matched the outer color to the vaigation in the center.

If you have or can get your hands on Leisure Arts Afghans for All Seasons Book 1 #100318, look for the Fourth of July Fanfare. I did that one in Bernat Berella Ombres and it turned out really pretty
