Double-Point needle question.....

The mittens I'd like to make say to cast on 32 stitches over 4 needles... One of my "elves" seems to have walked of with my 5th one.

 

Can I successfully cast them over 3 needles and have them come out the same? Haven't done anything on DPN's in forever!

Yep. Just keep track of how many stitches are where in case the directions say "on the second needle, knit two and..." when you getto the thumb. It'll work fine, just might take a moment's thought. You can also use a long circular needle and magic loop, in which case you can always use stitch markers where the needles should be.
