jamielynn1985 Posted January 15, 2011 I'm currently making a hat using the classic granny square 3dc "cluster" http://www.purlbee.com/storage/gran3.jpg Can I change out that kind of cluster for the one done in THIS AFGHAN without a change otherwise in the pattern? 0 hyphenatedlady Posted January 15, 2011 I would work just the first couple of rounds both ways and see how they compare.
0 magiccrochetfan Posted January 15, 2011 Are you using a pattern, or making it up yourself? the 3dc of a typical granny square is not really a cluster, it is 3 separate sts. a cluster st starts out as several separate sts but they are finished as one, so the top is only 1 st instead of 3. so you will need to add chains between the clusters to equal the extra sts in a granny, or add clusters. either way you will have a quite different fabric than the usual granny. to me the "cluster" described in the afghan you linked to is really a puff stitch, as shown in this tutorial http://www.stitchdiva.com/custom.aspx?id=124, not a cluster http://www.stitchdiva.com/custom.aspx?id=125. clusters can also be done with all the sts based in one st.
