Thread crochet baby beanie

Thread doesn't stretch like yarn, so if it were me I'd make a 'bucket' type of hat - like a beanie but the brim flares out a little.

Do you have the baby handy to measure his/her head, around where the edge would go (circumference), and the length from crown to edge (radius)? edited to add a link for average sizes for hats and all sorts of things here http://www.bevscountrycottage.com/size-chart.html

Beanies start with a flat circle (made by increasing each round), then are worked 'even' without increasing. The circumference of the flat circle = head circumference. Remembering our geometry classes, circumference divided by pi = diameter. Example, my head is about 21" inches, divided by 3.14 is about 6.75 inches. So, to fit my head with zero ease, I'd make a hat for myself with a flat circle with a diameter of 6.75 inches, then work even until it reached my ears.

There are some vintage baby BONNET thread patterns at http://www.antiquepatternlibrary.org/completelist.htm (do a search for 'baby', the books are organized by author), and there's a modern take on a vintage style here http://dawningdreamsblog.blogspot.com/2008/06/vintage-shells-bonnet.html

I think the more open bonnet style might work better with thread because of it's non stretchy properties, and allow for longer use as the baby grows. By open I don't mean lacy, I mean the set-back head opening is larger than a beanie.
