Where does the hook go?

Brand new here! Thanks for the welcomes!!

I'm starting my first real crochet pattern. It is a baby hat. I have a Dummies book on the way, but I'm too impatient to wait. I'm youtubing and searching online, but it may be faster to just ask my question and see if someone here can help or recommend a really good resource!

I can knit, but I'm set on this particular pattern in crochet that I think is so cute. I have the pattern before me and fussed over it last night. Got extremely frustrated. I think that the foundation chain (like the first row of knitting) is probably just extra hard to work into, but all the instructions I see online start after a few inches have been crocheted...well, sure I can see what's supposed to happen there!

Here is the first line of my pattern:

Round 1: Ch 2. Work 12 hdc into 2nd ch from hook. Mark last stitch with stich marker.(12)

My questions:

I can make the little chain, but WHERE do I put the hook in? Do I hold the chain and try to kind of go under it?? With only two chains, it's kind of hard to even see what is what...

Once I figure that out, the half double crochet is all going to fit into the one chain/hole? I wish I knew what it should look like at that point. I know no one who crochets.

Is this too difficult for me?

Thanks for reading!! Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

hi and welcome :hook

tutorial where to insert the hook http://www.stitchdiva.com/custom.aspx?id=191 lots of other good info there too.

excellent sites for all kinds of info

http://www.nexstitch.com/v_crochet_videos.html

http://www.crochetcabana.com/tutorials/index.htm

there's a for dummies site http://www.dummies.com/how-to/crafts-hobbies/Crocheting/Stitches.html

all of the stitches will fit into the chain stitch, but it would be more typical to start w/ a chain ring or adjustable (also called "magic") ring---info on those on the links above.

yup, what Kathy said... Try the "magic" ring..it's fantastic for doing projects that work in the round, as yours appears to be doing. And you can pull that tail to make the hole really small. :)

Another tip, is to do your chain with a hook one size bigger than what you need for the rest of your project. Especially when you're new to crochet, it's easy to make the beginning chain too tight. (there are plenty of experienced crocheters that do this as well).

Hope this helps.

And,

:welcome to the 'ville :)

Thank you all so much! I am going to check out those links. I am especially interested in the magic ring!

I realized too late I had posted in the wrong area! Oops! My apologies.
