Help resizing pattern for boys vest

beyondallmeasure

Question

the pattern is "Oscar" from pg 64 of "Easy to Crochet Cute Clothes for Kids." The book should really be labeled "...for preschoolers." I bought the book not realising that it did not have sizing for my boys, 6 and 8. The pattern is hdcs with shaping. Gauge: 19 stitches and 12.5 rows to 4" with G hook. Fits a 4 year old.

I have not been able to find a picture of it online.

Why questions is this:

CAN I SIMPLY CHANGE HOOK SIZE TO MAKE IT BIGGER? WILL THIS MESS UP THE SHAPING?

OR USE DC INSTEAD OF HDCS? WOULDN'T THAT JUST MAKE IT LONGER NOT WIDER?

I MIGHT NEED SOME PATTERN THEORY HELP.

THANKS! Sarah

You would be much better off finding a pattern in the correct size. Pre-school bodies are

not shaped the same as boys the age of your sons. Unless you want to start from scratch and redesign, look for another pattern. Of course if you have experience in pattern design and are good at sizing, have a go.
