Tapestry Crochet Edges

I've been trying to make some items in tapestry crochet, but none of them are looking all that great. The main problem is at the ends of the rows. When I don't change color at the end of the row, so that the color(s) I'm carrying have to be moved up, you can see them. And if I do need to change color at the end of a row it looks even worse - everything seems to get all twisted up. I've been searching the Internet like crazy to find some hints, but I haven't been able to find anything that addresses the ends of rows, just color-changes in the middle of a row. I've put these projects aside for some time because of this problem - but I'd really like to finish them. Has anyone come across good instructions they could point me to, or does anyone have any tips?
