Question about a guage swatch.

Scorpio59

Question

In all the years taht I have been crocheting, I have never done a guage swatch. But this time I'm going to give it a try.

If the instructions for the swatch say 15 sts + 14 rows = 4 in and this is double crochet, how many do I chain? 17?

the best way to do it is to have your swatch somewhat bigger than the measured area, because edges can be a little distorted. So in this case I would start with about 25 stitches (chain 24 +3 for the turning chain which counts as a stitch) and work until it is about 6 or 7 in. long. then measure the 4 in. in the center and count the stitches in that.

Hey that's great advice. Makes perfect sense when you think about it. Thank you for sharing that, b/c one day my stubborn self is gonna get in trouble and need it! (I never check my gauge either...)
