Yarn for Headbands

Lynn

Question

Does anyone know what kind of yarn (or material) is used for those baby headbands that look like ribbon? I've also seen beanies made from this yarn or material too. It looks like it would be stretchy but I don't know if its a yarn or what. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

yep, this gets posted about fairly often, they are not crocheted. this place sells the headbands and beanies http://www.thehairbowcompany.com/Crochetheadbands.html

couple of recent threads if you are interested in looking at them http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=113183&highlight=headband http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=116163&highlight=headband

i know there are other threads too if you want to see other ideas about crochet alternatives, search for headband.

You know I had an idea for a while but maybe it's crazy. I was thinking if you bought some skinny elastic and dyed it to mache the color of the yarn then using the yarn and elastic together crocheting the head band or just use white yarn and white elastic. Does anyone thing this would work? Mary

I think keeping an even tension on the elastic could be tricky, and there would have to be some tension on the elastic so the yarn would be a bit "contracted" so to speak and have some give.

Or, you could just buy something like this, from Bernat which is supposed to be stretchy....don't some sock yarns have an elastic component too? A quick Google showed several industrial suppliers, usually for the garment industry. Someone somewhere has to have that stuff for sale!

There are different opinons on this so I wrote to one of the companies and recieved an answer, they are actually crocheted with a hook by hand by someone in China.

There are some threads here that say used for hair accessories. for the pattern I think if you bought just one headband you could probably figure out how it was crocheted.
