Very Easy Baby Bib Pattern

Baby Bib

Materials: Worsted weight cotton yarn and H Hook

Notes: Sc corner is sc, ch 1, sc.

Hdc corner is hdc, ch 1, hdc.

 

Chain 21, turn.

Row 1. Sc in 2nd chain from hook, and in each following chain. Turn. (20 sc)

 

Row 2. Ch 1, hdc in first 2 sc, (hdc, ch 1, hdc) in next sc, *hdc in each of next 4 sc, (hdc, ch 1, hdc) in next sc. Repeat from * twice. Hdc in each of last 2 sc. Turn.

 

Row 3. Ch 1, sc in first 3 hdc, (sc, ch 1, sc) in next hdc, *sc in next 6 hdc, (sc, ch 1, sc) in next hdc. Repeat from * twice. Sc in each of last 3 hdc. Turn.

 

Row 4. Ch 1, hdc in first 4 sc, (hdc, ch 1, hdc) in next sc, *hdc in each of next 8 sc, (hdc, ch 1, hdc) in next sc. Repeat from * twice. Hdc in each of last 4 sc. Turn

 

Row 5. Ch 1, sc in first 5 hdc, (sc, ch 1, sc) in next hdc, *sc in next 10 hdc, (sc, ch 1 sc) in next hdc. Repeat from * twice. Sc in each of last 5 hdc. Turn

 

Row 6. Ch 1, hdc in first 6 sc (hdc, ch 1, hdc) in next sc, *hdc in each of next 12 sc, (hdc, ch 1, hdc) in next sc. Repeat from * twice. Hdc in each of last 6 ch. Turn.

 

Row 7. Ch 1, sc in first 7 hdc, (sc, ch 1, sc) in next hdc, *sc in next 14 hdc, (sc, ch 1, sc) in next hdc. Repeat from * twice. Sc in each of last 7 hdc. Turn

 

Row 8. Ch 1, hdc in first 8 sc, (hdc, ch 1 hdc) in next sc, *hdc in each of next 16 sc, (hdc, ch 1, hdc) in next sc. Repeat from * twice. Hdc in each of last 8 sc. Turn

 

Row 9. Sl st in 9 hdc, ch 1, 18 hdc, and ch 1. Then ch 1, sc in same stitch, sc in each of next 18 hdc, and sc in ch 1. (20 sc)

 

Row 10 – 20. Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. (20 sc)

 

At end of row 20, don’t chain 1. Instead turn bib to work on it's side. Sc evenly around edge to neck. Sl st across neck, then sc down opposite site. To make corners do whatever looks nice to you, either 3 sc, or sc, ch 1, sc. Join and finish off.

 

TIES: Ch 30, sl st in each sl st across neck, ch 30 and finish off.

 

This pattern fit nicely on my 4 month old great-granddaughter. This pattern can also be enlarged simply by adding multiples of 8 chains. For example, if you add 8 chains, your row #2 will be ch 1, hdc in first 3 sc, corner, *hdc in next 6 sc, corner, repeat from * twice. Hdc in last 3 sc.

The pattern starts with a basic neck-down shirt/sweater pattern. I just switched it around so the opening is in the back. Then instead of making armholes and completing the entire body, I just finish the front. I figured it would be easy to put on a baby, and also would cover shoulders too, which isn't a bad idea if you have a little one who's a bit messy. I made it in cotton because I figured it would be washed A LOT!
