Freeforming a Stocking Cap for my dad?

I am making a cap for my dad without a pattern or anything, and I just want to know how to start it, because I have gotten it to a point and it just keeps going down, and not out. I need it to go out. I'm currently at school, so I don't have a picture or anything, but I'm trying my best to describe it so that you can understand.

It almost looks like a cap for a banana, if that helps.

So my question is, how do I get it to build out and flat instead of down and narrow?

It sounds like you need to add stitches to make it wider. over a number of rows gradually add evenly spaced stitches. an increase is placing 2 stitches into one stitch. (you can place 3 sts in a st, but 2 is best for gradual increasing.) http://www.anniesattic.com/crochet/content.html?content_id=602&type_id=S

I'm assuming that when you say stocking cap, you mean a long narrow hat that comes to a point, something like this http://knitting.about.com/od/hatpatterns/p/striped-hat.htm and that you have started at the point and have created a narrow portion, and now you want to widen it for the part that goes on the head.

Actually, I mean.... Like a beanie? Or a skull cap? I don't know, really. My dad calls 'em stocking caps, but I know what he's talking about. It's one of those 'you'd have had to been there to understand the joke' kind of thing. It's really like a http://www.toneyfire.com/logon/images/toneygearpics/SkullCap.jpg

Don't know if that helps. Thanks though. I think I know what to do. Will definately be back if i don't get it. :yes

Okay, so now I've gotten it to come out, but it's not taking shape? It's just remaining flat. How do I get it to come out AND shape?

when you reach the diameter you want, stop increasing. continue to crochet rounds without any increases, just one stitch in each stitch, until you get the length you want.

to figure the diameter you need for the part where you are increasing, if you know the circumference you need, divide it by 3.14 (pi) to get the diameter. Make the top of the hat that diameter, stop increasing, and it will be the circumference you want.

Okay, now I have another question. Betcha you're tired of me already right? Lol. Okay so whenever I do my circle, I add the double stitches and it's giving me what I want. But it's doing a wobbley/wavy thing? Is there anyway to prevent this? Or am I doing something wrong in the crocheting?

Thanks again.

the waviness is caused by having more increases than you need. here is a thread about making a flat circle http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=88220 Granny square explains the formula for a flat circle and gives a link to info.

if your circle is not too wavy, it may not matter very much. once you start working straight the waviness may not be noticeable. for a hat I don't think you have to have a perfectly flat circle at first.

OHMYGOSH! Okay, now I'm getting it to come out, and not wobble as much, and I'm trying that whole magic formula thing, but now, it's not shaping. How do I get it to shape up and fly right?!

And I sorry for asking so many questions...I should probably be in the tutorials section, but thank you so much for being patient with me, and taking your time to help me out. I appreciate it very much.

And out of this experience, I did happen to make something the other night... I made a frisbee! Lol, my string broke while I was bringing it outwards, and tada! A frisbee. Flies quite well, too. :)

Sorry. Yes , I can, I think....

I have brought it out to the point where I want it, the diameter, and now I want to make it take it's shape as a hat? All it is right now is a flat circle. I will upload a picture when I get home tonight, hopefully...

I did just now. Thank you very much. I showed my friend, and she's like "Oooh! I want one!!!" So that's my next project.

You've been so helpful. Thank you! :)

I wish you luck in your oncoming projects.
