Well, it's not exactly the same, but this might help:

It's a Tunisian Dishcloth. I did it in two strands and made a hot pad. There's a picture in my craft album if you wan to see it. You could easily turn it into an afghan (if that's what you want) just by increasing the beginning chain.

Here is a pattern from Lion Brand for a beret. All you would need to do is make the triangles that the pattern calls for larger. It has the number of triangles that you were looking for in your original post too.

I love geometric patterns. I''ve never made a scarf and hat combo, but this one is wonderful.
