Introducing the Between the Cushions..... Afghan (image heavy)

I started this in August 08 as a Christmas present for my sister. But in early December I got sick, and my desire to see this through disappeared at about round 30. So it sat until August 09, when I decided to bring it out and finish it for Christmas 09. It is 60 rounds as printed, between modifications and trips to the frog-pond (and they were many) I must have done 120 rounds. Nevertheless, it was finished and shipped in time for Christmas. My sister opened it Christmas Eve and immediately called to rave about it!

It started out life as an attempt to do the Between The Meals Centerpiece as an afghan. But mid-way through I realized that some of chain rounds just wouldn't support the weight of the rest of it. So I had to make some serious adjustments to about 8 rounds in order to continue on once past the areas of all the chains.

First, some stats: I Love This Yarn: approx 8 skeins: white

Hook: I

finished size: over 73 Inches across

At this time I cannot seem to find an active link for the Between The Meals Centerpiece pattern. If someone finds one, please post it.

So, without further ado:

need proof?post-10797-135897492361_thumb.jpgI turned the first round into two to reduce ruffling

From middle up to round 38

Here's where the real fun began. The pattern calls for several rounds of chains, followed by shells. Wonderful as written for a doily, but the weight of the yarn in subsequent sections just made them impractical. So I improvised with some evenly spaced shells, gradually decreasing in size to V-stitches around.

Next problem is that in round 45 there are supposed to be 738 dc. The dc's and the chains in round 44 came exactly to 738. But I didn't like the way the dc's in round 45 lay, slightly ruffling. So I did 738 linked dc's. It made it very dense, but I believe added some needed support, and it was flatter.

The next challenge was the 92 dc loops. I tried it as written with the 15 dc's, but they were way too tight, so I reduced it to 13 dc's. If I do this again, I'll reduce it to about 11.

And then final rounds & the points:

I did not care for the picots, so I replaced them with shells.

There were other modifications, but were mostly minor.

Now, as I have a sneaking suspicion I have committed a sacrilege, you may break out the tar & feathers.

Enjoy!
