Let It Snow 2010 (Crocheted Snowflakes CAL and Share)

Hello and Welcome to Let It Snow 2010!

 

I have been a member and coordinator of the Snowflake Mondays CAL for a couple of years. This year no one had as yet stepped forward to continue that CAL as previously incarnated, so I am proposing a new sort of snowflake CAL this year.

 

To all lovers of crocheted snowflakes - come (any time is fine - as long as it is still 2010 somewhere in the world ), hang out, chat and share your favourite flakes. All flakes are welcomed, please give the source when you share them, whether it is free and online, paid and online, in a book, in a leaflet, in your very own head (in which case be prepared to be cajoled to get it onto paper ) or what have you. Let's all pool resources and share our love of the delicate lacy snowflakes and....

Is it ok if I lurk for a bit? I am getting ready to teach myself thread crochet and maybe I could get some pointers from the more experienced crocheters. Then I can join in?

My supplies haven't come yet. I ordered some stuff from a mail order catalog.

 

Do you use a cone holder or a ball holder when you use crochet cotton ? What do you use to stiffen the flakes ?

I'm not fussy about what material you use I'm not even that fussed that you actually make any , I coordinated the Snowflake Mondays CAL last year and don't think I made more than a tenth of the flakes ...

 

I just drop the ball of thread next to me when I crochet with crochet cotton, no fancy holders of any kind (though they might come in handy ...) Sometimes I have my thread or yarn on a ziploc bag so it can bop around without going for a little exploration on the floor ...

 

Personally, my favourite stiffener is a mix of PVA glue and water, then I use T-pins to pin the flakes out onto some boards I made using a six - twelve point concentric circle grid I printed out from an older snowflake site (I think it is archived now, so unable to be posted here on the 'Ville) which I glued onto a fabric bolt core, then covered with baking paper and then plastic wrap (I think - long time ago!). It works a treat!

 

I am Marikamum on Ravelry and I pop round the Crocheted Snowflakes group as well... I might even post a note about the CAL there...

I would like to try a very basic snowflake with some 3 ply cotton yarn I have. If it works out maybe try some tread at some point. I just love these and would love to make some.

Last year I had the bright idea of making small snowflakes to put on Christmas cards. I left it too late and never actually made any cards. So this year I hope to start early in the year so that I actually get those cards made.

 

For those of you who are thinking of using a heavier weight yarn that the size 10 thread that many flakes call for: I have a terrible time with size 10 thread, so I make most of my flakes with size 3 thread, regardless of what the pattern calls for. They come out bigger, but they still look pretty.

Marika, I'm very happy to see you've started a new CAL for snowflakes. I too have all of the past two years patterns in my snowflake folder, but haven't made them all (yet). I can say however that I've been able to put them in my Christmas cards for two years now.

I'm looking forward to another fun year of making flakes!

Hi, I have used empty, washed plastic milk containers to hold both thread and yarn skeins. I just use a sharp knife to cut a hole in the upper side of the container on the side opposite the handle as a place to insert the yarn/thread and once it's in place I run the loose end up through the pour spout and it's ready to use. It stays nice and clean this way.

:lol It's not hard. We've used a new one every week for two years and haven't come close to using up all the patterns that are out there. :lol

I just have to get their tails hidden and starch and block them. Then I'll take photos and get them all posted. Question for those of you who have used my patterns in the past. Is it easier when I post just one pattern at a time than when I post several together? Or does it matter?

I was kind of worried that the 2010 Snowflake CAL might not come together without a volunteer to coordinate. I would volunteer, but I have trouble managing my work schedule as it is. So I think this is a lovely idea to keep the group going. I will try to post a new pattern each week. (That's actually one of my resolutions...) I also designed a badge to link to this thread.

 

So here is my first pattern of the year. And here is the code for the badge if you'd like it. Just copy and paste the text into an HTML widget, and it *should* work. (I'm no IT master, so no guaranties, unfortunately. I'm not even sure until I actually hit post if the code below will post without linking. But fingers and toes are crossed!)

Jrnlyst - I love your resolution! and even if you only make it a percentage of the way through that, we'll all be lucky!!

 

Busy-bee-lmt - Love your resolution too and can't wait to see the first quartet. I'm a fan of your flakes and am happy to have them however they are posted. I am partial to individual listings as I find them easier to catalog, though the multiple listings definitely give more bang for your buck ... whatever works most easily for you and means that we get the patterns sooner rather than later or not at all works best for me in the end analysis .

 

Rose Red - I loved your flakes, I came across them just after posting my final flake on the 2009 CAL to my disappointment ... but now we'll have the link to them here, so !

 

My resolution is to write up my patterns for the two flakes I made for Missmaxx last year ( Cosmo! Wanda) in the Snowflake swap and if any more come out this year, bonus!

 

Would folks like me to try to collate the pattern sources people list in the first post for easy reference?

I've also started to run a list on the first post of this thread of flakes mentioned in the thread and their sources... and if you consider the fact that the past 2 1/2 years of CALs were limited to free, online flake patterns - if you start including patterns that require payment and ones in pamphlets and books, you could probably end up doing a different one for every day of the year !
