Adult Size: 22 1/2" to 24"

 

MATERIALS:

I hook

Approximately 8 oz. Red Heart Super Saver ww yarn, color, Red or color of choice

Scissors

Yarn Needle

GAUGE: 6 rows=2" and 6 scs=2"

ABBREVIATIONS USED:

ch = chain

cbs = crossed bar stitch

sc = single crochet

scs = single crochets

ea = each

st = stitch

sts = stitches

sl st = slip stitch

sp = space

yo = yarn over

hdc = half double crochet = yarn over hook, insert hook in designated stitch, yarn over hook and pull yarn through stitch (3 loops on hook), yarn over hook and pull yarn through all 3 loops on hook.

SPECIAL STITCHES:

cbs = crossed bar stitch = Crossed Bar Stitch - yo, insert hook in st or sp indicated, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yo insert hook in next st or sp indicated, pull up a loop (5 loops on hook), yo draw thru all 5 loops on hook - crossed bar stitch made.

Reverse hdc = reverse half double crochet = yarn over hook, insert hook in stitch to the right of the hook, yarn over hook and pull yarn through stitch (3 loops on hook), yarn over hook and pull yarn through all 3 loops on hook.

NOTE 1: Numbers in ( ) at the end of the rows is not a part of the instructions, it is simply stating the number of stitches you have at the end of that row.

NOTE 2: Do not join rounds unless instructed to do so. Place a marker in the first stitch of each round for round count. Move the marker up each round.

NOTE 3: Chain 2 at beginning of rounds 14 thru 17 does not count as a stitch, it's for height only.

WORK ENTIRE PATTERN HOLDING 2 STRANDS TOGETHER

ROUND 1: ch 2, 8 sc in first ch. do not join (8 sc)

ROUND 2: 2 sc in ea st around. (16 sc) place a marker in first st for row count. Move marker up in ea round.

ROUND 3: *2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next st. Repeat from * around. (24 sc)

ROUND 4: *2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 2 sts. Repeat from * around. (32 sc)

ROUND 5: *1 sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st. Repeat from * around. (40 sc)

ROUND 6: * 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 4 sts. Repeat from * around. (48 sc)

ROUND 7: 1 sc in ea st around. (48 sc)

ROUND 8: * 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 5 sts. Repeat from * around. (56 sc)

ROUND 9: *1 sc in next 6 sts, 2 sc in next. Repeat from * around. (64 sc)

 

ROUND 10: *2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 7 sts, Repeat from * around. (72 sc).

Piece measures 7 1/2" across from edge to edge, and 23 3/4" around at end of round 10. Do fewer increase rows for a smaller hat.

WORK IN BACK LOOPS FOR ROUND 11 ONLY

ROUND 11: sl st in next st, place marker in sl st, sc in back loop only of ea st around. End with sc in back loop of the sl st. Do Not Join. (72 sc)

ROUNDS 12 thru 13: Work in both loops. 1 sc in ea st around. Join with sl st in first sc. (72 sc)

ROUND 14: ch 2, *cbs, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join in the first ch-1 space of the round. (36 cbs)

 

[start the first cbs in the same st as the join. The next cbs always starts in the same stitch (or space) where the previous cbs ended.The final cbs of the round ends in the same stitch as the first cbs of the round.]

 

ROUNDS 15 thru 17 are worked in ch-1 spaces of previous rounds.

ROUND 15 thru 17: ch 2, *cbs, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join in first ch-1 space of round for rounds 15 and 16. Join in the top of the first cbs for round 17. (36 cbs)

 

Tip: when you come to the stitch with the chain 2, place your stitch between the chain 2 and the first cbs stitch, then complete the stitch you're working on. This will hide the chain 2.

ROUND 18: ch 1, sc in same space as join, *1 sc in next st, 1 sc in next sp. Repeat from * around. Do Not Join. Place marker in first stitch for row count.

ROUND 19: 1 sc in ea st around.

ROUND 20: WORK IN FRONT LOOPS ONLY FOR THIS ROUND. * 1 sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st. Repeat from * around. (84 sc)

ROUND 21: 1 sc in ea st around. (84 sc)

ROUND 22: *2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 6 sts. Repeat from * around. (96 sc)

ROUND 23: 1 sc in ea st around. (96)

ROUND 24: *2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 7 sts. Repeat from * around. (108 sc)

ROUND 25: 1 sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st, *1 sc in next 8 sts, 2 sc in next st. Repeat from * around. End with 1 sc in next 4 sts. (120 sc). sl st in next st.

ROUND 26: ch 2, 1 reverse hdc in ea st around. (120 reverse hdc)

 

Reverse hdc = yo, insert hook in next st to the right, yo, pull up a loop, (3 loops on hook) yo, pull thru all 3 loops.

Tip: Reverse hdc is very awkward, but it gets easier as you do it.

Fasten off and weave in ends

 

Embellish with the White Twinkle Choker, just make the straps long enough to tie in back and hang down.

Hi,

 

This might sound really stupid...but I am on the last round of this hat, and it isn't in the shape of a hat at all? It is a giant, flat circle. I am pretty new to crochet, so maybe there is something I'm missing...but do I need to do something to this hat to shape it into a hat? The pattern looks right - it matches the pattern you have posted in the pictures - it just isn't shaped the same. I used ww yarn and held 2 strands together throughout.

Cute hat.

Just had to pop in and say that the name of your hat reminds me of a tear-jerking old ballad called "Giddy-up Go" by Red Sovine (my Daddy loved that stuff, so I kinda got into it )
