"Baby it's cold outside" Snowman

This is the first crochet pattern I have ever written. I have sewn snowmen similar to this with a pattern I made, and thought I would try and crochet one. It hasn't been tested so if you find any problems pm me. I hope you like him.

 

“BABY IT’S COLD OUTSIDE” SNOWMAN

 

 

 

MATERIALS NEEDED

 

* G, H AND F Hooks

* Yarn in White, scrap of orange, and colors of your choice for hat and scarf (referred to as A and B) ( I used RHSS and Vanna's Choice worsted weight)

* 2- 8mm black beads (could use buttons or safety eyes also)

* #10 black thread or black embroidery floss

* yarn needle

* needle for sewing on beads and embroidery

* pink chalk or light pink blush

* stitch marker

 

Stitches and abbreviations used single crochet (sc), half double crochet (hdc), slip stitch (sl st), decrease (dec) and increase (inc)

 

Head & body

Using G hook

(working in rounds continuously, mark first sc of each round with stitch marker)

 

Round 1 - With magic ring or chain 2 , do 6 sc in loop. (6

Round 2 - * 2 sc in first sc (inc) , * around (12

Round 3 - * inc in first sc, sc in next sc, * around (18

Round 4 - *inc in first sc, sc in next 2 sc, * around (24

Round 5 - *inc in first sc, sc in next 3 sc, * around (30

Round 6 through 11 – sc in each sc around (30

* Sew on eyes between rows 8 & 9

Round 12 - *dec sc, sc in next 3 sc, * around (24

Round 13 - *dec sc, sc in next 2 sc, * around (18

Round 14 - sc in each sc, around (18

* Stuff head

Round 15 - *inc in first sc, sc in next 2 sc, *around (24

Round 16 - *inc in first sc, sc in next 3 sc, * around (30

Round 17 - *inc in first sc, sc in next 4 sc, * around (36

Round 18 - *inc in first sc, sc in next 5 sc, * around (42

Round 19 through 38 – sc in each sc around (42

(Can make your snowman taller here by adding rounds)

Finish off, stuff body ( do not overstuff bottom of snowman, you want it to sit flat)

 

Bottom of snowman

 

Follow instructions for snowman – Round 1 through 5

Round 6 - *inc in first sc, sc in next 4 sc, * around (36

Finish off leaving long tail to sew to body.

 

Lining up where you finished off on body and bottom, pin ( or I used my stitch markers) pieces together and whip stitch around (catching bottom loop of body to top loop of bottom). Weave in end of yarn and trim.

 

 

Hat 1

Using H hook

(working in rounds)

 

Round 1 – With color A, chain 26, join with sl st to first chain, chain 2

Round 2 – hdc in same stitch as slip stitch and around, join with slip stitch pulling through color B and chain 1. (DO NOT BREAK OFF at end of rows just keep it out of the way till needed again)

Round 3 – sc around, join with sl st to chain 1, chain 2

Round 4 - hdc around, join with sl st in top of chain 2 pulling through color A, chain 1

Round 5 – sc around, join with sl st in chain 1 pulling through color B

Round 6 – repeat Round 3

Round 7 – repeat Round 4

Round 8 – repeat Round 5

Round 9 – repeat Round 3

Round 10– *hdc in next sc, hdc dec, around, join with sl st changing to color A, chain 1

Round 11 - * sc in next sc, sc dec, around, join with sl st, chain 2

Round 12 - *hdc in next sc, hdc dec, around join with sl st, finish off leaving tail.

Weave tail through loops in top of hat and drop yarn to inside of hat tighten and knot off, weave in all ends. Make pom pom to attach to top of hat (could use bells or tassels also)

 

 

 

 

 

 

Hat 2

Follow as for hat 1

Rounds 1 through 9

Round 10 – hdc around. Finish off

Lay hat flat with the seam at the middle back. With Color A , make a loop as if you were going to start a chain (have a few inch tail on this). Put your hook through both layers of hat at corner, pull through the loop you just made and sc, sc across, finish off leaving a few inch tail. Pull tails to inside corners of hat and weave through a couple of stitches to secure it, making sure you end back up at the corners.

Make tassels, pull tails of tassels to inside corners and tie together with tails you had earlier. Weave in all ends

 

Scarf

With H hook

This is worked across starting and finishing at same points in each row, leave a tail at ends for fringe on scarf.

 

With color A chain 60, finish off

With color B hdc across, finish off

With color A sc across, finish off

With color B hdc across, finish off

With color A sc across, finish off

Trim ends of fringe.

 

Nose

With F hook and orange

Chain 6, slip stitch in 2nd chain from hook and next 4, chain 1, sl st through

2 loops side by side (see pic) all the way down, finish off, thread yarn tail in needle and run across and down to other end of nose. Roll between your fingers to round it out, attach to head one row down from eyes.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Embroider on eyebrows and smile if wanted, blush cheeks and your done

 

 

Arms optional: with brown yarn, chain 12, sl st in 2nd chain from hook and next 4, chain 6 sl st in 2nd from hook and next 4 and in remaining 7 (from beginning). Can add more fingers if desired. Attach to shoulders.
