Warming Families in partnership with LandsEnd is holding a nationwide hat challenge this fall and winter! From Sept 1- Dec 31, 2009 we are inviting everyone to make at least one warm hat for their nearest 'Warming Families' Chapter! (And by the way! We need more Chapter Area Volunteers all across America! You can click here for info on that.)

Vickie Howell of DIY will be created a couple of hat patterns to use, or we can use our own. Sizes will be from newborn to adult male and everything in between!

For more info see here:

http://www.freewebs.com/warmingfamilies/hatchallengeanyone.htm

There will be more info forthcoming as the time gets nearer!

I hope many of you will join us!

I have some info on my chapter page too:

Hi Mattsmom,

At this time there are no Chapters taking preemie hats, as Warming Families serves homeless people for the most part - hats needed will be mostly teens and adults for most of the chapters.

I have an unusual chapter and will be accepting newborn hats for the families who have babies at UMC, no preemie sizes though. There are so many homeless and very poor people who use the county hospital - they have 15-20 newborn born every day at UMC Vegas.

If you want to donate some preemie hats, there are many hospitals who accept them on this page:

The hat challenge for WF does not start till Sept 1st! I am just gearing up for it though! So excited!! :)

It depends on what pattern you use and how tightly you crochet. :) I usually use a size H and sometimes a G to make items.

This one uses an H hook and it will fit ladies and teens. You could use a size smaller (G) for younger kids and a size larger (I) for larger heads.

I am looking for newborn sized hats and there is a pattern here for that

I'm in.

My heart has been tugging to help more, especially the homeless/in need people in NC. I can't volunteer because of my own physical limitations, but I will pass the word online and hopefully somebody in NC will be up as coordinator volunteer.

If not, I had planned on checking by phone with local shelters. Didn't think about hospitals, but they do see alot of folks with no insurance.

Thanks for being willing to make hats for this. There will be ads in magazines and in the Landend catalog coming up in August.

Also, you make a good point... We really need some more Chapter Area Volunteers. Anyone interested? It's not hard and really rewarding. :)

Here is the page of info

I don't know your physical limitations, but you might be able to handle being a CAV for us. It requires finding a shelter who will accept warm items for their clientelle. Having people mail things to you for your area, and then you counting them up and taking them to the shelter.

That's really about it.

Most of us are not inundated with millions of items! LOL!!

I will leave that judgment up to you though. And if you have friends who could do it in NC that would be fabulous!

Hi Everyone,

First I'd like to thank Bev, for letting me know that she posted this, on this forum. :) I am Kaye, in charge of Warming Families and asking others to help out with this hats project.

I am sure that local hospitals will accept hats for preemie's, but our main focus with the hat challenge is helping the homeless. Other idea's are Ronald McDonald Homes, church outreach programs to help the homeless, nursing homes, domestic violence shelters, homeless shelters,

Thanks,

Kaye

Preemies and NICu's are not part of the hat challenge or Warming Families. That doesn't mean that you can't make help all the NICU's you want to!! They need it!

I've been thinking about it a bit more and one thing I misunderstood is that this drive is asking for items to be mailed to *A* coordinator who will distribute in their *region*. correct?

My plans were to send some items to nearby Ronald McDonald (like I did for Easter) via a co-worker at dh's job; nearby nursing homes and one or two nearby homeless shelters.

Within or less than an hour driving because I have to ask family to deliver for me.
