Having problems increasing a stitch ....

Yarn overs are supposed to leave a gap, that's why they are so essential to lace knitting. They make little holes, as do M1's (Make 1's). What you you making? Maybe a KFB (Knitting into the front and back of the stitch) would work better for you than a yarn over.

Jempast, are you knitting the standard garter stitch "Granny" dishcloth, the one knit on the diagonal beginning with only a few stitches, increasing, then decreasing back down to only a few? The holes from the yarn overs are decorative and entirely meant to be there. They make a pretty border of YOs with two stitches to the outer edge of them. That IS the pattern.

 

Like ADS and Kathy said, there are increases which are more or less invisible, but be sure that is the look you want when you use it.
