Size 10 Thread in color Purple?

Hi, I just crocheted a hot pad in blues using Red Heart Lustersheen skeins. Now I want to make another hot pad that looks like a Cluster of Grapes with Green Leaves.

I want the thread to be Size 10 (easy for me to work with) but I want some "sheen" to it.

Any suggestions on what thread to buy before I spend too much money trying out different brands? For some reason, the Knit-Cro-Sheen was too thin for me. Maybe I bought a bad ball... :eek

Thanks,

Denise

I think Cebelia has a good sheen. Handy Hands Tatting has a good selection of colors. They might also be able to help you with other less familiar brands they sell.

This website has always been a good thread information source for me. She has thread reviews

Jo Ann Fabrics has in her online store rayon thread. It is quite nice and has a beautiful sheen. It can be hard to work with but I have used it before and it does add a lot to any project. It shows purple but doesn't seem to list it. You might google rayon crochet thread if it interests you otherwise I would go with Cebelia as I use it a lot and it is really nice and adds a bit of sheen.

My favorite is cebelia, followed by Aunt Lydia's or Southmaid. I'm not to fond of DMC's Royale. I did however find this website the other day and they have some Rayon thread in size 10 which I have never used. The pictures shown of the thread show a Wonderful sheen to it and they do have the purple. I have never ordered from them or used this brand of thread but it certainly looks like it might be just what you are looking for.

I have some beautiful Aunt Lydia's purples I just picked up at AC Moore the other day so I know they also have the purple.

Hope this helps,

TLOL,

Toni

Thanks so much everyone! I really appreciate all this advice. :clap

It looks like Cebelia is most everyone's favorite so I am going to try that first. I also like Flora (never even heard of that one until I posted) and buy 1 ball of that just to compare.

Funny, I used Red Heart's Lustersheen when I made a hot pad in 3 different blues and it really didn't have any luster or sheen except for the Spa Blue color. I don't know why that is... Is yarn changing? :think

I will keep you updated on the difference between Cebelia and this Flora.

Thanks again! :manyheart

I never worked with Aunt Lydia's before. Is AC Moore a store? I have a Michael's near me and they never stock very much as far as crochet threads. I'm lucky if I see a white or ecru.

I may buy 1 ball of Aunt Lydia's online also just to compare. Oh golly, if you knew how many different brands of blues I bought! I have enough leftover to make about 4 more Blue Hotpads!! :hook

Thanks!!

Denise

  • 1 month later...

Here are the two places online where I buy threads I can't get from the local craft shops:

Here's the Flora Page at hhtatting: http://www.hhtatting.com/results_threads.cfm?SubCategory=21

I bought the Flora I have from Lacis. It's listed as Cordonnet Flora

Threadart.com has a beautiful selection of colors. I've used their purple and love it. :)

Thread Art crochet thread. The purple is not as dark as it looks online (at least on my screen). It does have a nice sheen to it (and it's not even expensive!).

Just saw the date on this thread, so I'm afraid I may be a little late. :blush

Royale has a nice sheen to it and depending on the color will decide how thick it is.

Stay away from rayon for a hotpad - it'll melt.

Cebelia is one of the more expensive threads.

I didn't like knit cro-sheen at all - I found it very stiff.
