Well, not just afghan hounds, cocker spaniels are included, too. My name is Michael Austin and, as the topic title implies, I crochet blankets for dogs in shelters. If it barks and wags a tail I love it. Crochet for cats is my next project. I also crochet afghans for veterans and soldiers. Granny square afghans are my specialty for the humans; solids for dogs and cat since I don't want paws or claws snagged. Between the Snuggles Project and Afghans for Soldiers I've been keeping busy.
Hi! I stumbled upon this site just today (while looking up info on some "mystery yarn" from Big Lots), but I'm glad I found it. I've been crocheting since I was a teenager (many years ago), but only got really actively crocheting again about 1 1/2 years ago (after one of my sons, an autistic young man, died of a seizure). I've since accumulated more yarn than I can use on projects for just the family, so I do a lot of charity crochet (especially for Project Linus and Snuggles Project). Because so much of what I do is charity crochet, of necessity most of my stash runs to machine-washable acrylic yarns. I tend to make a lot of granny-square projects -- but at least don't attempt to use granny squares for everything, the way it seemed to be when I was learning to make granny squares back in the 1970s. I live in a small town in central Illinois, and can buy a little yarn locally, but have to drive (or order online) for most stuff. Looking forward to meeting other crocheters here!
